Blethen offered basketball scholarships by UNH and BU
Boothbay native is the fifth player on current 16U roster to be offered a scholarship
Maine Firecracker and Boothbay Regional HS standout Faith Blethen had a great week. She attended two elite basketball camps and was rewarded with NCAA Division I scholarship offers from both.
Boston University and University of New Hampshire were busy this week as they hosted the 15 year old soon-to-be sophomore on their respective campuses. She was able to interact with the coaches and players as well as play in games and drills. It gave the coaches more insight to her skill set than just playing games which they have already observed.
As is anytime a player from Maine gets recognized for their commitment and skill, we all celebrate this day with the Blethen family. “Faith has a lot to be thankful for and she doesn’t need to look any further than mom and dad (Brian and Lesley Blethen)” said her Firecracker coach Don Briggs. “The commitment the entire family has made traveling from Boothbay three and four times a week, games on the weekend, coaching our seventh-grade team with younger daughter Glory, and always asking what can we do to help…they are a special family and we are fortunate to have them in our program.”
Briggs continued, “Faith is playing on our highest level team, she works hard in practice, has a great team first attitude, and she comes off the bench. She doesn’t play the majority of minutes (at least this year) and that has been an adjustment for her. Going from significant contributor to role player. But she has accepted her role very well and understands she needs to play at a high level for the team to have success. She is a pleasure to coach and at 6’2, long and athletic, and developing the mental and physical toughness needed to play at the next level, it is easy to see why I have regular discussions with 17-18 Division I schools about her. BU and UNH are the first of many and Faith will have options to consider when that time comes in the future.”
Sometimes we get caught up in the physical attributes and lose sight of how much time kids put into their craft. Faith is tireless in her pursuit of playing college basketball. Briggs commented, “Faith keeps herself of top physical condition, she shoots on her days away from our practices, she wants to get better. She has a high IQ and asks great questions. She will mature physically over the next few years and her best basketball is ahead of her. She is surrounded by great teammates that support and push each other to improve. It was a great weekend.”
With this offer, Faith becomes the 17th Firecracker player to receive a scholarship offer and the fifth player on the current 16U team.
